Retirement Announcement: Dr. James Caillouette

To my patients, friends, and colleagues:

It is with a mix of gratitude and anticipation that I write to inform you that I will be retiring from practice at the end of December 2022. It has been forty-three years since I began medical school and I have had an amazing life experience as a physician and orthopedic surgeon. I have practiced only at Hoag since I started in a solo office in 1988 through today at Newport Orthopedic Institute. Over the past three and a half decades, I have been fortunate to have cared for thousands of members of our community and beyond. It has given me great joy to see patients’ pain and disability eliminated through surgery, and to also help their friends and family members when needed.

My time in practice has also given me an opportunity to help in the design and development of hip and knee implants, instruments, and even software all aimed at improving the outcome of surgery. This creative process helped to further my knowledge in orthopedic surgery in so many ways including giving me the opportunity to teach both in the US and abroad and to build friendships throughout the world.

My decades at Hoag have seen dramatic changes occur. At the time that I arrived, the surgeons at Hoag performed a combined 150 hip and knee replacement procedures. Today at the Hoag Orthopedic Institute, that number is about 4,000. My partners and I at NOI were able to create the first joint venture surgery center with Hoag and subsequently the Hoag Orthopedic Institute was created. Each chapter was a learning experience for me and I am grateful for how my path evolved.

I will continue to see post-operative patients until the end of January 2023.  While I will be stepping away from my friends and colleagues at NOI and HOI, my patients at Newport Orthopedic Institute will be in very good hands. Dr. Nader Nassif, Dr. Matthew Siljander and Dr. Michael Hunter are all superbly trained, capable and experienced Adult Reconstruction surgeons who I would comfortably refer my closest family to if needed.

Finally, while I will no longer be a practicing surgeon, I will continue at Hoag as the President of the Hoag Specialty Clinic and a member of the board of the Hoag Clinic. This leadership role will bring both new challenges and enjoyment as Hoag continues to bring world-class care here to Orange County. My deepest thanks to my partners/friends at NOI for joining me in a wonderful career. Thank you all for your friendship and your trust in me to care for you, your family, and your patients. I am grateful.

Warmest regards,

Dr. James Caillouette
