Hip Procedures : Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Steps In the Procedure

Step 1. The thighbone is separated from the hip socket and the damaged ball is cut off.

Step 2. The damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the hip socket.

Step 3. A metal shell is pressed into the socket of the hipbone. (The shell may be held in with bone cement or screws may be used to attach.)

Step 4. A special liner* is locked into the metal shell and the artificial socket is complete.

Step 5. The end of the thighbone is hollowed out.

Step 6. The titanium hip is placed into the top of the thighbone.

Step 7. A metal or ceramic ball component is attached to the stem. It will act like the leg's original ball.

Step 8. The new ball and socket components are joined to form the new hip joint.

In most patients, Dr. Caillouette performs a total hip replacement in about an hour. Dr. Caillouette will remove the damaged cartilage and bone, then position new metal and plastic joint surfaces to restore the alignment and function of your hip.

After surgery, you will be moved to the recovery room where you will remain for one to two hours while the recovery from anesthesia is monitored. After you awaken fully, you will be taken to your hospital room.
